About Shrove Tuesday: Shrove Tuesday is an English tradition, related to Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras. In these traditions, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday marks the last day before Lent, and is a day full of lavishness. Our 40-day journey in Lent is intended to remind us of Jesus’ time in the desert wilderness following his baptism by John. It is a time to assess and renew; to confront our demons; to confess our weakness; to gain strength from the Spirit of God. In preparation for Lent we start by symbolically steeling ourselves against temptation by getting rid of all the delicious food we don’t eat in Lent – or at least the goodies our medieval ancestors were forbidden to eat: rich foods with lots of fats and sweets – so we take the bacon, sausage, butter, syrup, eggs, milk and rich flour out of the larder and prepare a Shrove Tuesday feast in which we consume it all.
